Computer Basics Operations

A computer does several tasks such as playing awesome games, doing calculations, creating and managing documents, processing spreadsheets, and more. Here, we have created a list of basic computer operations.

Five Operations: Computer Basics Operations

There are five basic operations of computer which are as follow:

Input Unit: Computer Basics Operations

Input is the essential operation of the computer. It refers to the act of feeding in the data and information in the computer system.

All the information and instructions enter into the system through input devices like keyboard, disks, microphone, or through another computer. Moreover, without the input unit, the entire computer system will be a display device and not allow users to interact.

Mouse- It is a handheld device people use for performing functions like selecting icons, moving icons, and more.

Microphone- It is an input device, which takes voice as an input.

Keyboard- It is the most common type of input device and used for putting in the information.

Processing Unit

Processing is the task of performing calculations and comparisons. Further, ALU (Arithmetic and Logical Unit) is the unit that is responsible for the processing. It is the actual place where the actual execution of data takes place. It also does all the calculations and comparisons. Further, ALU may produce intermediate results. Then, these results are stored in the memory and transferred to ALU for final processing.

Output Unit

The output unit presents the data in front of the user. Since the computer produces a result in binary form. Thus, the output unit decodes the information to make it readable and understandable for the user.

Hard output devices like printers and plotters are hard output devices that are permanent.

Soft output devices such as monitors, speakers, and projectors produce temporary output.

Storage Unit

Before the processing of the data, the instructions and information to be entered should be stored somewhere inside the computer. Further, saving of the results after processing will take place before being displayed to the user. Thus, the need for a storage unit arises.

However, the storage unit is external or internal. Thus, for storage purposes, a computer system has different devices like registers, cache, RAM/ROM, flash, magnetic disc, and many more.

There are two types of storage devices:

Primary storage devices are small in size and are internal to the computer and hold data temporarily. While secondary storage devices have massive storage capacity and also hold data permanently. Further, they can be external or internal to the system. Primary storage devices are small in size and are internal to the computer and hold data temporarily.

Control Unit

The ALU doesn’t know what should be done with the data likewise; output unit does not know when the result should be displayed. Further, a control unit works by receiving input information that it converts into control signals, to be pass on the central processor. Thus, the control unit tells the hardware about the functions to carry out.
